This Unit focuses on using the newest technologies to always perform minimally invasive procedures (laparoscopic and endoluminal) in order to avoid pain and to reduce risks for patients, aiming to provide the best results possible.

Thoracic surgery

The general surgery Unit’s team tries to reduce the discomfort of the patient by using minimally invasive techniques such as thoracoscopies for pulmonary nodes, lung neoplasia, treatment of pneumothorax with lung resection and pleurectomy, treatment of pleural diseases, VATs, thorax drainage, bronchoscopies for malignant tumour or benign diseases).

Top Procedures:

  • Diagnostic / operative thoracoscopy + pleuro-parenchymal biopsies + pleural talcage
  • Resection with video thoracoscopic pulmonary wedge
  • Pneumothorax treatment by bullectomy + videothoracoscopic pleural decortication
  • Pulmonary lobectomy
  • Pneumonectomy

Abdominal surgery

For abdominal surgery the Unit uses the latest technologies to perform laparoscopic colonic resections, gastric resections, abdominal hernia repair. The Unit’s best practice is the laparoscopic total preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair that it performs since 1998 and it is certainly a less invasive technique that reduces the risk of recurring hernia and reduces hospital stay and recovery days at home for the patient.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Hiatal hernia
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
  • Oncology
  • Perforated gastro-duodenal ulcer
  • Hepatic neoplasms
  • Choledochus calculosis

Top Procedures:

  • Video laparoscopic fundoplication according to Nissen and / or Toupet
  • Subtotal and total gastro resections
  • Video laparoscopic raffia
  • Gastro-jejunal and bilio-digestive derivatives
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Distal pancreatic resections, laparoscopic adrenalectomy
  • Laparoscopic resection of the small and large intestine
  • Anterior resection of the rectum
  • Ammino-perineal video laparoscopic amputation according to Miles

Endoscopic/Laparoscopic Surgery of Obesity and Related Metabolic Diseases

For obesity and metabolic diseases, the Unit is the leading Italian centre and one of the best in all of Europe for endoluminal treatment such as the Redo procedure of previous RYGB failure, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), Endobarrier System, POSE, using of all kinds of intragastric Balloon placements (Allurion Elipse, Orbera 365, Helioscopie, Spatzl).

It organises theoretical and hands-on training courses for surgeons and gastrointestinal specialists who want to gain knowledge of these new procedures.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Obesity
  • Metabolic Diseases
  • Failed Bariatric Surgery

Top Procedures:

  • Positioning of BIB (physiological + methyl blue), gastric endobag (Air)
  • Endobarrier
  • Redo surgery and primary gastric plication using the Apollo OverStitch system
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding
  • Laparoscopic gastrectomy
  • Laparoscopic gastric bypass

Top Procedures:

  • Minimally invasive inguinal hernia treatment: TEP (extra-peritoneal)
  • Video laparoscopic appendectomy
  • Video laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Laparoscopic plastic / laparotomic

For this field the Unit’s team offers the latest techniques such as Longo’s mucoprolassectomy, STARR, THD, traditional hemorrhoidectomy Milligan Morgan. The aim is to reduce pain and to guarantee the best results to the patient that comes to the centre.
