The San Raffaele’s Fertility Centre, a part of Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit, welcomes a large number of sterile couples every year, guaranteeing access to the most modern techniques (In Vitro Fertilisation - IVF, Intracytoplasmatic Sperm Injection - ICSI). Established in 1994 after several years of scientific and clinical trials, the Centre has currently reached a phase of extensive development, allowing the treatment of all causes of infertility. Alongside the traditional medical and surgical diagnostic methods, it is possible to access all the therapies currently available, i.e. Medical-Assisted Procreation (PMA) techniques of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels ranging from simple monitoring of ovulation on spontaneous cycle, to the execution of assisted reproduction cycles through the micromanipulation of female and male gametes. In addition, a fertility preservation path is guaranteed in patients at risk of early ovarian failure.

The Centre performs over 1.500 ovulation induction cycles per year both for simple homologous intrauterine inseminations (IUI) and for more complex PMA techniques. The possibility of having a pregnancy after a "fresh" transfer cycle and subsequent defrost cycles reaches a very high success rate (44.9% in patients under the age of 35 years). Furthermore, it guarantees the highest standards of ethical and welfare integrity. Each couple receives a personalized treatment and all the staff of the staff shares this philosophy.

The Centre has an embryology laboratory adjacent to the operating room for the recognition of gametes, micromanipulation of gametes, embryo culture and cryopreservation of oocytes and sperm. Among the most innovative methods the laboratory makes use of prolonged embryo culture in blastocysts, intracytoplasmic injection of morphologically selected sperm (IMSI), assisted hatching, polarized light microscopy and the possibility of blastocyst preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

Alongside an intense clinical activity, the Centre pays particular attention to scientific research with studies on the interaction of gametes, on embryonic development and on endometrial receptivity, aimed at optimizing the therapeutic results. Moreover, the Centre is distinguished for the low rate of twin pregnancies, which has been progressively reduced to 10.6% (2015) in order to fully satisfy the most recent European guidelines.
