Nasopharyngeal swabs can be performed at authorized GSD facilities for the diagnosis of COVID-19. The test is a quick, painless and comprehensive diagnostic examination that allows to detect positivity to the new coronavirus.
What is the nasopharyngeal swab?
It is a diagnostic test that measures possible presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (responsible for the coronavirus epidemic) in the upper airways in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Unlike the Serological Test, the throat swab also detects the ongoing contagiousness.
How is it done?
The test is performed using a swab (similar to a cotton swab) that painlessly takes small tissue samples of the oral and nasal mucosa. No fasting or preparation is required.
After having carefully sealed it, the sample is sent to the microbiology lab and subjected to a particular procedure called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) which allows the amplification of viral microorganisms and the identification of presence of pathogens.
When will I have the results?
The test produces positive or negative result for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The report is available within 48-72 hours and can be viewed online.
In addition, the Lombardy Region has activated a temporary online service to access reports of the COVID-19 swabs. You can access it from the homepage of the FSE (Electronic Health Record) site of the Lombardy Region. It is possible to use the service even if you do not have the FSE access credentials (SPID, OTP, CNS and CIE).
For more information visit the page www.fascicolosanitario.regione.lombardia.it/homepage
What to do in case of a positive result?
In the event of a positive result, the result is communicated to the competent health authorities (ATS) and the patient is required to isolate him-/herself until further indications from the aforementioned authorities.
At the GSD facilities nasopharyngeal swab for private patients costs € 90-92.
