Paolo Carlo Righini

Biography

Dr. Carlo Righini is a vascular surgeon of the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery of the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.

In 1999 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan, and in 2003 he also received a specialization in vascular surgery and angiology at the same university with honors. He carries out a specialization program at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, where he has been engaged in endovascular surgery since the late 1990s. He also had the opportunity to periodically attend and participate in the surgical activities of the Department of Cardiac Surgery under the supervision of Dr. Lorenzo Menicanti.

From 2001 to 2002, he took courses in vascular surgery and aortic and cardiac surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England under the supervision of Professor S. Westaby and Professor M. Yacoub. Performed surgical care and research activities as Medical Director at Istituto Ospedaliero Fondazione Poliambulanza (2003-2005), where he improved surgical methods of revascularization of distal lower extremities, and at the Clinico Humanitas from 2005 to 2008. At the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, the headquarters of the Specialized School of Vascular Surgery of the University of Milan, he was assisted in the Department of Vascular Surgery II under the supervision of Professor S. Trimarchi, from 2009 to 2013 and since 2013 continued as a Senior Surgeon in the Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Department under the supervision of Professor Nano.

Dr. Righini, as the first surgeon, has performed more than 3,500 surgical interventions, both open and endovascular, in relation to the treatment of aortic aneurysmal pathology, obstructive pathology of the aortoiliac region and lower extremities, carotid arteries, varicose veins of the lower extremities, as well as the endovascular method with using a laser or radio frequency. During his career, he has performed more than 90,000 Doppler ultrasound examinations of the entire vascular system (carotid arteries, aorta, renal arteries, scrotum, and lower extremities).

He participates in the research activities of the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in the field of aortic and carotid artery pathologies and carries out tutoring activities in the course of medicine and surgery and specialization in vascular surgery of the University of Milan, as well as in the training program for obtaining medical qualifications.

Dr. Righini is currently the principal investigator or co-investigator of several spontaneous or multicenter studies conducted by Policlinico San Donato, which relate to various aspects of aortic, carotid and revascularization of the vessels of the lower extremities and endovascular surgery. He is also involved in the development of guidelines on phlebological pathology (SIF) and is the author of more than 32 articles in international scientific journals (Hirsch Index 8) and co-author of 3 textbooks on various aspects of vascular and phlebological surgery. 

He has received numerous invitations as a speaker at national and international conferences and is a member of the most prestigious scientific societies in this field (European Society for Vascular Surgery, European Society for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, American College of Thoracic Physicians, Italian Society of Surgeons, Italian Society for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Italian Society of Phlebologists).
