The Knee Surgery Unit’s main field of interest are represented by prosthetic revision surgery, ligament injury and trauma surgical repair and meniscal lesions. The Unit’s Head physicians and team are widely recognised as experts in the field of complex ligament injuries and are frequently asked to attend and teach in hands-on trainings of this kind of surgery in national and international events. In addition, Professor Roberto D’Anchise is one of the most eminent expert in the field of meniscal lesions and is the first surgeon to offer meniscal transplant in Italy.

Knee Replacement

The number of revision total knee arthroplasty, and unicompartimental knee arthroplasty has been raising in recent years. The aim of the Unit’s team is to study and to treat all cases leading to a revision of total knee arthroplasty and unicompartimental knee arthroplasty. There are many causes for failure in prosthetic surgery (infection, aseptic mobilization, painful knee without mobilization); the Unit studies all the factors with the most updated key techniques such as, soft tissue analysis, CT scan, laboratory analysis, and provides the most appropriate treatment programme to its patients.  Professor Roberto D'Anchise is recognised as one of the most eminent experts in this kind of surgery.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Failed Prosthetic Surgery of the Knee

Top Procedures:

  • Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty
  • Revision Unicompartimental ‘Partial’ Knee Arthroplasty

Arthroscopic Surgery

Meniscal lesions are very common in people who practise sports, they are treated in many ways, starting from a traditional meniscectomy, through meniscal sutures with different devices commercially available, to meniscal transplant (Professor Roberto D'anchise is the first surgeon to have started doing a meniscal transplant in Italy in 2002).

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Meniscal Lesions
  • Sports Trauma

Top Procedures:

  • Meniscectomy
  • Meniscal Sutures
  • Meniscal Transplant

Ligament Repair

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is performed every day by our team using anatomical techniques. Also, sometimes using allografts tendon (in selected cases), we repair complex ligament injuries like posterior cruciate ligament injuries, posterolateral complex and anterolateral ligament. Our team is often called to teach this kind of surgery in national and international events in live surgery and Cadaver-lab surgery. Our post-operative protocols focus on a rapid recovery and return to sport activities, the knee brace is not necessary and the patient is followed for 6 months in the post-operation recovery by our divisional clinic centre.

Main Pathologies Treated:

  • Ligament Injury and trauma
    • Anterior cruciate ligament
    • Posterior cruciate ligament
    • Posterolateral and Anterolateral ligament

Top Procedures:

  • Ligament reconstruction by
    • Anatomical techniques
    • Allografts tendon

Professor D’Anchise and his team always perform an arthroscopic surgery using the most recent devices (such as the new “no screw” button and the tight rope for the cruciate ligament reconstruction, various kinds of devices for meniscal sutures, the SwiveLock for the MPFL reconstruction), in addition to the most recognised kind of prosthesis available in both, unicompartimental and total replacement.
