The Dermatology and Cosmetology Unit deals with both the diagnosis and treatment of all dermatological diseases, chronic inflammatory diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases. Specific competences have been developed in the infectious field, in organ autoimmune diseases, in neoplastic diseases and in the surgery for these conditions.

The Unit performs dermatological surgical procedures that require local anaesthesia, paediatric dermatology operations, laser surgery (Co2) and outpatient surgery interventions. The Unit has innovative equipment for prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancers.

The Unit is a reference centre for the diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo with the use of the latest generation laser equipment (excimer laser and narrow band UVB) and for the diagnosis and therapy of psoriasis and autoimmune diseases (centre PSOCARE) by biological drugs prescription and with the use of excimer lasers.

The Unit’s Head Physician and Team carries out teaching activities and tutoring activities for the Degree in Medicine and Surgery, and the Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics. Professor Santo Raffaele Mercuri himself is the Chief and the holder of the Dermatology and Cosmetology course, and the Surgical Dermatology course, as part of an integrated course in rheumatology, immunology and dermatology for the degree in Medicine and Surgery at the San Raffaele Vita Salute University. As part of the Degree in Dentistry and Dental Prothesis, the Professor also holds the course in Dermatology, Surgical Pathology and Nursing sciences.



General Dermatology

The Dermatology and Cosmetology Unit deals with all the aspects of General Dermatology. In particular, its clinical activity is concentrated on the diagnosis and treatment of the most common cutaneous diseases, both infective and non-infective.

Oncologic Dermatology

The Unit’s Oncological Dermatology division deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous cancer diseases. Particular attention is paid to the prevention of tumour lesions by early detection of melanoma and pre-cancerous lesions. The Unit uses the technique of manual dermatoscopy, digital epiluminescence mapping and the new digital mapping scanner technology that stores the entire body’s surface and allows greater diagnostic accuracy and better follow-up.

The Cosmetology division deals with the treatment of all main clinical and aesthetic cutaneous problems. The Unit is well-known for innovative treatments against skin aging, localized adiposity, stretch marks, pigmentation and scarring, PRP for localized hair therapy and possible baldness surgery. Thermage treatment of skin laxity and medium-superficial wrinkles in the face, abdomen, arms, inner thighs and buttocks is also available at the Unit.
