Gianpaolo Balzano
Biography
Gianpaolo Balzano, Pancreatic Surgeon and Chief Surgeon, heads the Department of Functional Pancreatic Surgery at the Department of Pancreatic Surgery of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, headed by Professor Massimo Falconi.
After graduating in 1989 from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Milan State University, in 1994 he received the highest grade in the specialty "Emergency surgery and first Aid". In 1997, he became the medical director of the Department of General Surgery of the Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan. Since 2005, he has been the Senior Medical director of the Department of Functional Surgery of the Pancreas.
Dr. Balzano is mainly engaged in pancreatic surgery. He performed a total of more than 1,000 pancreatic resections as the first surgeon, including 700 duodenal pancreatectomies and more than 100 laparoscopic distal pancreatic resections using minimally invasive techniques.
In addition to clinical activities, Dr. Balzano is engaged in research in the field of pancreatic surgery aimed at improving surgical techniques and increasing the survival rate of cancer patients. He is the author of more than 400 scientific publications, including 105 articles in journals with IF (total IF = 422); scopus Hirsch index = 35 (July 2019).
In 2012, he received a national scientific qualification for the position of university professor in the field of general surgery of the first and second range. He has held senior positions in various scientific societies: he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian branch of IHPBA (International Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Association); was Secretary of the Italian Association for Pancreatic Studies (AISP) and coordinator of Oncoteam Pancreas of the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery (SICO).
Dr. Balzano is also one of the developers of the Italian recommendations for the treatment of acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis and cystic lesions of the pancreas.
