He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pavia in 1987 and, in 1991, specialized first in Ophthalmology and then in Medical Hydrology at the same university.
In 1994, he founded one of the first Refractive Surgery Centers in Italy. In 1996, following this achievement, he was appointed Contract Professor of Refractive Surgery at the University of Pavia.
Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to developing refractive surgery techniques to correct conditions such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, becoming a leading expert in excimer laser and femtosecond laser technologies, pioneering the introduction of innovative methods in Italy.
In addition to performing surgery for ocular adnexa, glaucoma, retina, and vitreous diseases, Prof. Perone is highly recognized for his surgical expertise in keratoconus treatment (he was among the first in Italy to perform INTACS implantation, deep lamellar keratoplasty, and femtosecond laser-assisted corneal transplants) and in surgical procedures for myopia correction.
In this field, Prof. Perone boasts one of the largest national case series for phakic IOL implantation and PRK and LASIK methods for surgical correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Regarding cataract surgery, he performs approximately 2,000 procedures annually.
In 2011, he was awarded the prestigious title of “Master of Italian Ophthalmology” by the Italian Ophthalmology Society.
For his humanitarian merits (establishment of two ophthalmology units in Africa and over 25 humanitarian missions), he was first awarded the title of “Knight of the Italian Republic” by President G. Napolitano and later the title of “Commander of the Italian Republic” by President S. Mattarella.
