Luigi Beretta

Luigi Beretta is the head of the Department of General Anesthesia and Neurosurgical Intensive Care at the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele. Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, Director of the Specialized School of Anesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain at the University of Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Vice President of P.O.I.S. (PeriOperative Italian Society).

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan (1982), he received a specialization in anesthesia and intensive care at the same university. During his studies, he attended the following centers: Institute of Neurological Sciences. The Southern General Hospital - Glasgow - Scotland; Department of Anesthesia - Reanimation Pediatrique Centre Hospitalier Regional University of Aix-Marseille - France; Center for Pediatric Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, specializing in neuroanesthesia for diagnosis, determination of methods of loco-regional anesthesia for the treatment of children. Later he was a visiting professor in the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of Houston - USA, 2001. After his stay at the Policlinico of the Milan State University in 1985, he arrived at the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, where he headed the Intensive care Unit for patients with neurosurgical diseases in 1998.

He collaborated with the European Brain Injury Consortium on traumatic brain injuries; was a scientific representative of Lombardy in the Italian Society of Anesthesia, Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). His research activities are mainly focused in various fields: acute cerebral insufficiency, severe traumatic brain injury, treatment of intracranial hypertension, subarachnoid hemorrhage, organ donation, epidemiology of severe traumatic brain injury, neuroanesthesia, neuroprotection, general and cervical-head anesthesia; anesthesia and perioperative management, accelerated recovery after surgery and postoperative analgesic therapy.

Author of 133 articles in international indexed journals (Scopus, Pubmed) (total 2500 citations, HIRSCH INDEX 25). Professor Beretta is on the editorial board and is a reviewer of some major scientific journals, such as: Journal of Emergencies Trauma & Shock Internationa, The Open Neurosurgery Journal, Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing; Intensive Care Medicine; Minerva Anestesiologica; Journal of Clinical Anesthesia.
