Биография

Dr. Giovanni Paolino is a dermatologist at the Dermatology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, directed by Prof. Santo Raffaele Mercuri.

After a study period in France at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, he obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2010. He then specialized in Dermatology and Venereology at La Sapienza University of Rome, focusing primarily on the early diagnosis and treatment of melanoma and cutaneous reactions in pediatric onco-hematology patients.

From 2010 to 2017, he deepened his expertise in dermatopathology at the Dermatopathology Unit of the San Gallicano Institute in Rome, particularly in tumor and inflammatory skin lesions as well as drug-induced reactions (especially in oncology). During this period, he acquired the ability to analyze routine histopathological skin slides. In 2020, he earned a PhD in Dermatology from La Sapienza University of Rome. In November 2020, he obtained eligibility as an Associate Professor in Dermatology and Venereology.

Since November 2017, Dr. Paolino has been a consultant at Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan, where he primarily focuses on oncological dermatology. He has been appointed as the Organizational Coordinator for the Melanoma Disease Unit (DU) within the Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he has led and continues to oversee various organizational processes in preparation for accreditation.

In his daily clinical practice, he specializes in both non-invasive and invasive dermatologic oncology diagnostics, including medical consultations, mole mapping, in vivo confocal microscopy, drug reaction biopsies, and the excision of pigmented and non-pigmented lesions through minor surgical procedures.

Dr. Paolino is currently the primary dermatologist for patients with BRCA1/BRCA2 mutations, those enrolled in the GASTROPERME program (hereditary intestinal, stomach, and pancreatic cancers with genetic mutations), the Oncological Urology Unit and clinical trials, and the Rheumatology/Immunology Unit. He also collaborates with the Hematology Unit on myelodysplastic diseases and has been involved in the DU PS-CLL within the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

He works closely with the Pathological Anatomy Department (Dr. Nathalie Rizzo, Dermatopathology), reviewing histopathological slides when clinical-pathological correlation is required for a definitive diagnosis. Due to his expertise in dermatopathology, he has also served as a lecturer in a second-level Master’s program.

Dr. Paolino has been and continues to be an investigator in numerous clinical trials related to dermatologic oncology. He is a member of several dermatology societies, including the Italian Task Force for the Study of Cutaneous Reactions in Oncological Therapy, the Italian Group for Oncological Dermatology, and the Dermatopathology Group (SIDeMaST).

He is also involved in basic research, collaborating with the Italian National Institute of Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) to study melanoma metastasis and the pathogenesis of the pre-metastatic niche. His research focuses on proteomic, lipidomic, and genetic analyses of extracellular vesicles (microvesicles and exosomes).

Dr. Paolino is the author of over 180 international scientific publications spanning approximately ten years, as well as seven book chapters. His current h-index is 18, with 1,295 citations (according to Scopus as of June 8, 2023).

He has been a speaker at national, European, and American conferences and has received a total of six national and international awards for his scientific contributions at a young age. These awards were conferred by the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (Vienna, Austria), the American Academy of Dermatology (Washington D.C., USA), the Italian Society of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Rome and Milan, Italy), and the MelanomaDay patient association.
