Dr. Maria Antonietta Volonté is a neurologist at the Neurology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele.
In 1984, she graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan, where, in 1988, she also specialized in Neurology. In 1993, she obtained a specialization in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation from the same university.
Professional Experience:
- From 1988 to 2000, she worked as a Medical Assistant at the IV Neurological Clinic of the University of Milan, San Raffaele Hospital (Milan).
- From 2000 to 2008, she was a Medical Officer in the Neurology and Neurophysiology Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, Neurological Clinic of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
- Since 2009, she has served as the area coordinator for the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Unit within the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital.
In 1994, she gained clinical experience at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases in London. Since then, she has developed a particular focus on the diagnosis, treatment, and research of movement disorders.
The Clinical Unit she coordinates cares for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and movement disorders through intensive outpatient services and, for selected cases, diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative hospital admissions.
In January 2004, in collaboration with colleagues from the Functional Neurosurgery Unit, she introduced the Deep Brain Stimulation surgical procedure.
In addition to this procedure, advanced therapies are employed for the more complicated stages of the disease, such as subcutaneous apomorphine and foslevodopa infusions, as well as duodenal infusions of duodopa. Additionally, the unit pursues several lines of research, particularly focusing on clinical trials for new drugs for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and parkinsonisms.
