Biographie

Dr. Vittorio Martinelli is the Head of the Functional Neurology Unit at the Neurology Department of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, directed by Professor Massimo Filippi.

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1982, where he also completed his specialization in Neurology, again with honors, in 1986.

Dr. Martinelli is also the Coordinator of the Multiple Sclerosis Area within the Functional Neurology Unit. He specializes in inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) such as Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis Optica, CNS Vasculitis, and MOG-associated diseases. As the Head of the Neurology Unit, he also manages patients with degenerative diseases, cerebral vascular problems, movement disorders, and peripheral nervous system disorders.

Throughout his long career, he has been involved in implementing innovative neurophysiological techniques (visual, somatosensory, acoustic, and motor evoked potentials), epidemiological studies, and conducting phase 2, 3, and 4 clinical trials for various neurological conditions, particularly in the field of Multiple Sclerosis. His research has also extended to studying the risk/benefit ratio in clinical practice and new pharmacological therapies, the doctor-patient relationship, its proper management, and the related psychological aspects.

He has participated as Group Leader, Principal Investigator, or Co-PI in numerous national and international clinical research projects. He has contributed to the design and execution of research projects and the writing of theses for Medicine, Neurology specialization, or PhD programs. He has conducted and participated in studies on genetic and epigenetic aspects, lifestyle factors, the intestinal microbiota, and the importance of the beneficial effects of Vitamin D related to autoimmune diseases, with a specific focus on inflammatory CNS diseases.

Dr. Martinelli is the author and co-author of over 323 publications, with an H-index of 64. He consistently participates in national and international congresses in the field.
