Anastasiia ByvaltcevaSpinal manipulation is a medical technique developed by Robert Maigne. It involves a specialized adjustment of spinal joints, where a doctor applies a controlled force to move them to the limit of their natural range of motion without exceeding anatomical boundaries. This movement is often accompanied by a characteristic popping sound, known as "joint thrust", which results from a sudden change in pressure within the joint.
This technique is widely used in rehabilitation to treat various musculoskeletal disorders. At Zucchi Wellness Clinic in Monza, it is applied to relieve pain and enhance mobility in the musculoskeletal system.
Dr. Mirko Mutti, a physiatrist at Zucchi Wellness Clinic and a specialist in the Specialized Rehabilitation Unit at Istituti Clinici Zucchi, explains the details of this method.
Spinal Manipulation: What It Is Used for and When It Is Indicated
"Spinal manipulation focuses on treating the musculoskeletal system to relieve pain and improve joint and muscle function," explains Dr. Mirko Mutti.
This non-invasive technique is indicated for various conditions, both acute and chronic, including:
- Primary and secondary headaches;
- Migraine;
- Neck pain (cervicalgia);
- Upper back pain (dorsalgia);
- Lower back pain (lumbalgia).
In addition, spinal manipulation can be used for more complex conditions such as:
- Cervicobrachialgia (neck pain radiating to the arm);
- Lumbosciatica (lower back pain with radiation to the leg);
- Herniated discs;
- Degenerative diseases, such as hip and knee osteoarthritis.
"One of the most appreciated aspects of spinal manipulation is its gentle nature. It is not a painful procedure but a precise and targeted method that helps restore joint balance and mobility, significantly improving the patient's quality of life," emphasizes Dr. Mutti.
How a Spinal Manipulation Session Works at Zucchi Wellness Clinic
At Zucchi Wellness Clinic, a spinal manipulation session begins with a comprehensive patient history and evaluation.
"Our top priority is to ensure an accurate and personalized diagnosis," explains Dr. Mirko Mutti. "For this reason, we carefully analyze diagnostic reports, such as X-rays and MRIs, to precisely identify the problem and create a tailored treatment plan for each patient."
During the session, manual techniques such as joint mobilizations and muscle stretching are performed to reduce pain and improve mobility.
"On average, three spaced-out sessions are recommended to achieve the best results," says Dr. Mutti.
"It is important to note that spinal manipulation does not always result in a joint thrust (the characteristic popping sound). In many cases, targeted myofascial release or gentle muscle relaxation is enough to provide significant relief, reducing tension and pain without the need for more intense mobilization."
This therapy is especially popular among athletes, who see it as an effective tool for injury recovery and maintaining peak physical performance.
Additionally, spinal manipulation can be combined with advanced technologies such as virtual reality (D-Wall) and Tecar therapy for an even more precise and customized approach.
Contraindications
Although spinal manipulation offers numerous benefits, it is not recommended in the presence of the following conditions:
- Fractures;
- Bone or joint infections;
- Acute inflammatory diseases;
- Severe osteoporosis;
- Certain oncological conditions.
"For elderly patients, this type of therapy may not always be suitable," warns Dr. Mutti. "In such cases, a thorough medical evaluation will help determine the most appropriate treatment option."
