Professor Elio Scarpini is a specialist in neurology at Casa di Cura La Madonnina and a consultant neurologist at the USD Neurology-Neurodegenerative Diseases, Dept. of Neuroscience and Mental Health, of the Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, Italy.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan (1977), he specialized in Neurology at the same university, and in 1989 he obtained a national authorization to practice as a Chief of Medicine for the same specialty.
In the course of his career, Prof. Scarpini undertakes studies and research at important institutions such as the University of Padua (1982) and Pennsylvania University (1986).
In 1981, he began his work as a Neurology Medical Director at IRCCS Fondazione Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan, where he remained for several years, and where from 2013 to 2022 he held the positions of Director of the UOSD of Neurology-Neurodegenerative Diseases and the Laboratory of Neurochemical Diagnostics, Genetics and Molecular Biology, as well as head of the UVA (Alzheimer's Assessment Unit) Center and the Multiple Sclerosis Center.
From 2007 to present, he has been Associate Professor of Neurology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Milan.
As for scientific activity, throughout his career Professor Scarpini conducts research in the field of Dementia and specifically the identification of biological and genetic markers for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and Frontotemporal Dementia and the testing of innovative drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's Dementia and Multiple Sclerosis.
He participates in numerous European and national projects on frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease and has as many as 515 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 10 chapters in international volumes, and 3 international volumes as an editor. His H-index (Scopus) is 70.
