Prof. Fabio Barili is a member of the staff at the S.C. Cardiac Surgery Unit of IRCCS Policlinico San Donato and a TD-B Researcher in Cardiac Surgery at the University of Milan.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2000 from the University of Milan and obtained his specialization in Cardiac Surgery from the same university in 2005. In that same year, he completed a fellowship at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, USA.

In 2009, he earned a Ph.D. in Surgical and Transplant Sciences and a Master's degree in Medical Statistics and Statistical Methods for Epidemiology.

In 2017, Prof. Barili achieved National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor in the field of Cardiac-Thoracic-Vascular Surgery, and in 2023, he achieved National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in the same field.

From 2005 to 2008, he worked at the Cardiovascular Surgery Department of the Monzino Cardiology Center IRCCS under Prof. Paolo Biglioli. From 2008 to January 2024, he served at the S.C. Cardiac Surgery Unit of the Hospital S. Croce e Carle in Cuneo, where he developed a specific interest in minimally invasive surgery and transcatheter approaches to mitral valve disease.

Since February 2024, he has been performing all adult cardiac surgeries at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, with a particular focus on minimally invasive procedures.

Prof. Barili is currently the Scientific Secretary of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery and a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Epidemiology of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA, USA. He is a Founding Member of INTEGRITTY, an international research group aimed at evaluating the integrity of scientific information, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Cuore Domani Foundation.

From 2019 to 2023, he was the Head of the Research and Methods Task Force of the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. From 2010 to 2016, he was a member of the Aegis Cardiovascular Research Foundation in Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA, and from 2015 to 2016, he served as a Statistical Consultant for the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. From 2014 to 2018 and from 2021 to 2022, he was a member of the Nucleus of the ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Surgery.

In 2012, he participated in the Review Committee for the "2012 ESC-ACCF-AHA-WHF Expert Consensus Document on Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction" and in 2021, he contributed to the review of the 2021 ESC/EACTS Guidelines on the treatment of valvular heart disease.

He has been involved as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in numerous national and international research projects. As a Principal Investigator, he won the 2013 Finalized Research and Young Researchers Call from the Ministry of Health, which funded the research project “The Priority Study - Predicting Long Term Outcomes After Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery.”

He is a co-investigator for the IRC Investigator Grant 2018 (IG-2018) “Immune checkpoint neutralization to recover anti-tumor Vγ9Vδ2 T-cell activity and reinforce anti-CD38 therapy in myeloma” and is a member of the Trial Steering Committee of the Roma Trial (Randomized Comparison of the Clinical Outcome of Single Versus Multiple Arterial Grafts) from Cornell University, NYC, USA, and the University of Toronto, Canada.

Prof. Barili has organized or participated in the organization of over 30 national and international congresses. He has been an invited speaker or moderator at over 70 scientific conferences both in Italy and abroad and has presented oral communications/posters at over 80 scientific meetings internationally.

Since 2018, he has collaborated with the Department of Epidemiology of the Lazio SSR ASL - Rome 1, a reference center for the National Outcomes Program. Since 2021, he has worked with the National Agency for Regional Health Services (AGENAS) as a member of the Working Group on “Audit Activities,” part of the National Outcomes Plan.

He is a member of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (since 2009), the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (since 2009), and the European Society of Cardiology (since 2018).

From 2015 to 2023, he served as Associate Statistical Editor of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and has been an Associate Editor of The Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine since 2019. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Italian Journal of Cardiology and a reviewer for leading journals in cardiology and adult cardiovascular surgery.

He has 131 peer-reviewed scientific publications listed in PUBMED, with a total of 9,597 citations and an h-index of 24 (Scopus, as of May 13, 2024).
