Georgios Filippou

Dr. Georgios Filippou is a Rheumatologist at the Rheumatology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi - Sant'Ambrogio.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 2001 from the University of Siena, where he also specialized in Rheumatology in 2005. In 2009, he obtained a PhD in Experimental Rheumatology from the same university. In 2018, he became a "Cultore della Materia" (Subject Expert) in Rheumatology at the University of Ferrara. In 2023, he became a Researcher at the University of Milan, working at IRCCS Galeazzi Sant’Ambrogio.
Dr. Filippou has focused his scientific interest on the use of imaging for the diagnosis and follow-up of rheumatic diseases, particularly chronic inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Spondyloarthritis) and crystal-induced arthritis (gout and calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease).
His scientific interest focuses on the use of imaging in the diagnosis and follow-up of rheumatic diseases, particularly inflammatory arthritis and microcrystalline arthropathies (gout and calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition disease).
Throughout his career, Dr. Filippou has published over 120 articles in indexed international journals and has an h-index of 32. He coordinates the international OMERACT Ultrasound in CPPD research group, is a member of the EULAR task forces for creating international guidelines on microcrystalline arthropathies, participates in the joint American College of Rheumatology/EULAR task force for developing classification criteria for calcium pyrophosphate crystal arthropathy, and is part of the faculty for EULAR and the Italian Society of Rheumatology for musculoskeletal ultrasound courses. He also organizes and speaks at national and international conferences.
