Laura De Girolamo
السيرة الذاتية
Dr. Laura de Girolamo is a biologist and Director of the Biotechnology Laboratory in Orthopedics and RE.GA.IN Center (Regenerative Galeazzi Institute) of the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Clinical Research Institute.
In 2002, she graduated from the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the University of Insubria, and in 2008, she completed her doctorate in Pharmacology, Chemotherapy and Medical Toxicology at the University of Milan.
Later she studied as a postgraduate research student at the Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology of the University of Milan, where she began to study biological methods of treatment for the regeneration of bone and cartilage tissue.
After her doctorate, she continued to expand her knowledge in the field of regenerative medicine at the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi Institute and other international centers, including Brigham and Women’s Hospital - Harvard University in Boston (USA).
Currently, Dr. De Girolamo holds the dual position of the Director of the Laboratory of Biotechnology in Orthopedics and Director of the RE.GA.IN Center (Regenerative Galeazzi Institute) of the Galeazzi Clinical Research Institute. These two organizations, which are dedicated to basic research and clinical research, respectively, are closely integrated with each other and have a common goal of defining and developing the best therapies for skeletal muscle tissue in regenerative medicine.
The main research interest for her is the regenerative medicine of skeletal muscle tissue, with special attention to the development and optimization of biological methods for the regeneration of joints, in particular those affected by arthrosis, and tendons.
For many years she has devoted herself, in particular, to the study of mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue or bone marrow, both for intraoperative use and for use after in vitro propagation.
She coordinates clinical trials involving the use of biotechnological (orthobiological) products at the Istituto Galeazzi Institute, and with the help of the RE.GA.IN. she has the opportunity to regularly observe how what she studied in the laboratory is applied in practice.
To date, Dr. De Girolamo has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is an active member of various international scientific societies:
• Chairman of the SIAGASCOT Fundamental Science Committee (Italian Society for Arthroscopy of the Knee, Upper Extremities, Sports Injury, Cartilage Pathology and Orthopedic Technologies);
• Former Chairman of the ESSKA (European Society Sport Knee Arthroscopy) Committee on Fundamental Science;
• Leader of the European Orthobiologics Initiative.
