Massimo Colombo

Professor Massimo Colombo is the Director of the Liver Centre at the Clinical Research Institute Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan. He is also the Chairman of the EASL International Liver Foundation, Geneva, Switzerland.
His studies began with a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1971. In 1977, he completed his specialization in Gastroenterology at the same university, while pursuing his clinical activity at the Hospital Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico in Milan. Then he spent 2 years abroad as a researcher in Hepatology in the Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital, School of Medicine, New York.
From 1991 to 2016 he was the Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Milan. From 2000 to 2016 he was the Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Medical Specialties and Organ Transplantation of the Hospital Ospedale Policlinico Ca' Granda di Milano. From 2016 to 2020 he was the Director of the Centre for Translational Research in Hepatology at the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Rozzano.
His research work includes diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver transplantation. He is the member of various professional associations and societies, including American Association for the Study of the Liver Disease, the European Association for the Study of the Liver and other international and Italian associations.
He has received numerous awards for his clinical and research activities: in 2010 in Vienna he received the EASL Recognition Award from the European Association for the Study of the Liver for "outstanding contributions to medicine and science"; in 2014 in Leipzig he received the Thannhauser Medal Award from the German Society of Gastroenterology for his scientific and clinical contributions to the study of liver diseases; in the same year 2014 in Rome received the AISF (Italian Association for the Study of the Liver) Award for his scientific and clinical contribution to hepatology in Italy; in 2017 in Tehran received the 2017 International Kowsar Award from the Bakiatalla University of Medical Sciences, and in the same year in Seoul received the Nelson Fausto Award from the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) for research in liver cancer.
Professor Colombo was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Hepatology from 2005 to 2009, where he was also associate editor from 1995 to 1999. From 2015 to 2019 in the same journal he was the Special Section Editor. He has served as the strategic advisor to the editor of Liver International since 2015 and as co-chair of the editorial board of TARGET HCC (USA) since 2017. He is also a member of the editorial board of various international hepatology journals. He was the Chairman of the Editorial Committee for the EASL Clinical Practice Guidelines for benign liver tumours (2014-2016) and occupational liver diseases (2017-2018). He was a visiting professor at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, Yale University in New Haven, University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Hammad Hospital in Doha.
He has published more than 500 articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. His Hirsch index is 94.
