Riccardo Rosati

السيرة الذاتية

Professor Riccardo Rosati, Full Professor of General Surgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, is the Head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Unit and the Week Surgery Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He collaborates with other institutions within the group, including the Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan. Since 2014, he has been the Director of the School of Specialization in General Surgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, a school renowned nationally and internationally.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan in 1980 and specialized in General Surgery at the same university in 1985. His educational journey continued at the University of Turin, where he obtained a specialization in Thoracic and Pulmonary Surgery in 1988.

His medical practice focuses on Digestive System Surgery, employing both traditional and minimally invasive approaches. Specifically, he primarily treats neoplastic and benign diseases of the esophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum, while his background also includes hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases. Regarding Endocrine Surgery, carried out in his operational unit, he performs laparoscopic procedures for adrenal gland diseases and favors mini-cervicotomy for thyroid and parathyroid conditions. Under his leadership, the surgical units he directs have performed over 25,000 surgeries since 1996.

Professor Rosati has actively contributed to the development of various surgical techniques, particularly in promoting minimally invasive surgery (first procedures in 1989) in general, emergency, trauma, and day surgery. He was the first in Italy to introduce outpatient hospitalization for laparoscopic surgeries under general anesthesia, such as cholecystectomy and abdominal wall repairs for hernias and incisional hernias.

Under his direction, the San Raffaele Hospital has seen significant growth in oncological surgery of the digestive system, becoming the leading Italian center for esophageal surgery volumes and one of the top centers for colon and rectal surgeries. He has also established and coordinated two specialized multidisciplinary groups: one dedicated to the study, research, and treatment of upper digestive tract diseases (esophagus and stomach) and the other focused on colorectal diseases.

His bibliographic output includes over 478 scientific publications, and he has participated extensively in national and international conferences.

Professor Riccardo Rosati is a member of many scientific societies, including the SIC (Italian Society of Surgery), GIRCG (Italian Research Group on Gastric Cancer), ACS (American College of Surgeons), ESA (European Surgical Association), ISDE (International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus), and ESDE (European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus), where he served as President from 2021 to 2023, as well as SISME (Italian Society for the Study of Esophageal Diseases), of which he is a founding member.
