Core Needle Biopsy (CNB; microhistological sampling)
What is it?
It is the needle sampling of a fragment of breast material for histological analysis. It is a more invasive examination than needle aspiration and provides more accurate information.
When is this exam indicated?
Core needle biopsy is performed when palpation, mammography or ultrasound reveal a suspicious or doubtful lesion.
How is it performed?
As for needle aspiration, it is performed by the radiologist who guides the needle into the lesion, constantly monitoring its position using ultrasound. It is performed under local anesthesia.
How to prepare for a core needle biopsy
If the patient is being treated with aspirin or anticoagulant therapy, this must be mentioned upon booking.
Always bring mammograms, breast ultrasounds, breast MRIs or previously performed needle aspiration and needle biopsy. It is essential to bring the examination that required needle biopsy.
Contraindications
None. Possible side effects: hematoma.
