Preoperative breast localization
What is it?
This technique is used to localize non-palpable lesions which need to be operated.
When is this exam indicated?
If the lesion, which must be removed by surgery, is not palpable, the surgeon needs to know where to operate. For this reason, the radiologist, once the lesion has been identified by mammography, ultrasound or MRI, places a reference that can guide the surgeon on the lesion.
How is it performed?
There are variety of centering (localization) systems, including radioactive tracer injection (ROLL) or metal guide wire. Both are placed using a needle, carried out with the same procedures as the needle aspiration.
Contraindications
None
