Pancreatic Surgery
Pancreas Surgery Department of the Ospedale San Raffaele is one of the first in Europe for the number of operations and low mortality. The high experience and specialization of the area is proven by the over 1,000 pancreatic resections carried out in the last 3 years.
The volume of interventions is a key indicator since pancreatic diseases are rare, their diagnosis is difficult, and pancreatic surgery is considered the most complex of all abdominal surgery.
Equally fundamental is the multidisciplinary approach. At the Pancreas Center, directed by Professor Massimo Falconi, each case is discussed collectively by surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, radiotherapists, endocrinologists, nutritionists and psychologists. Such a high quality of the care is also possible thanks to the hospital's experience in pancreatic ultrasound endoscopy, an essential diagnostic test, and the work of the Clinical Oncology Department, which is a national and international reference center in the oncological treatment of pancreatic tumors.
Thanks to this close collaboration San Raffaele is among the few centers to offer neoadjuvant chemotherapy protocols (before surgery), capable of improving the outcome of the interventions.
