Dr. Alessandro Bombaci is a neurologist at the Neurology Unit of IRCCS Policlinico San Donato.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Turin in 2015 with top honors (110/110 cum laude), an academic mention, and publication rights for his thesis. He later specialized in Neurology in 2019 and earned a Ph.D. in Neuroscience in 2024 from the University of Turin. During 2018-2019, he was a visiting researcher at the MND Centre of University College London (UCL).
Dr. Bombaci is a researcher at the "Vita-Salute" San Raffaele University in Milan and a neurologist at Policlinico San Donato, with both inpatient and outpatient roles.
His clinical interests primarily focus on neurodegenerative diseases, especially motor neuron diseases, ALS, spastic paraparesis, and genetic neuropathies. He has gained substantial experience over 9 years at the ALS Center led by Prof. Chiò in Turin. Over the past 4 years, he has acquired specialized expertise in neurorehabilitation as the lead neurologist for the Don Gnocchi Center in Turin, "Santa Maria ai Colli." Additionally, he has developed skills in instrumental techniques, specifically in performing electromyography, TSA Doppler, and transcranial Doppler, through national courses.
Since 2015, he has conducted research under Prof. Chiò’s guidance at the ALS Center in Turin. His main scientific interests include translational studies and fluid biomarker research in neurodegenerative diseases, with a focus on motor neuron diseases, spastic paraparesis, and neuropathies. He initiated the creation of a large biobank within the Neurosciences Department in Turin, collecting over 600 biological samples from motor neuron disease patients, MND mimics, and controls. His other scientific interests include neuroinflammation, cognitive aspects, and palliative care in motor neuron diseases.
He has taught as a teaching collaborator at the University of Turin in 2023 and 2024 and has served as a clinical and thesis tutor for medical and biotechnology students from 2020 to 2024 at the University of Turin.
He has also held the position of national coordinator for the Italian group of young neurologists.
Currently, he is the under-40 representative on the ALS and FTD panel of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) and part of the coordinating group.
He participates in national and international neurology conferences, serving as both moderator and speaker.
