Massimo Piepoli

Professor Massimo Piepoli is the Director of the Perioperative and Rehabilitation Cardiology Unit at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato and a Professor at the University of Milan.

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Cardiology at the University of Pavia in 1987 and 1991, respectively.

In 1996, he earned his Philosophy Doctor (PhD) at Imperial College, University of London (UK).

He also completed a Master’s in Echocardiography at the Institute of Clinical Physiology in Pisa.

He worked at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Pavia, then at the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at John Radcliffe Hospital, University of Oxford (UK), and the Department of Cardiology at Royal Brompton Hospital, Imperial College London (UK).

Professor Piepoli has served as Director of Cardiology at the Guglielmo da Saliceto Polichirurgico Hospital in Piacenza and the Val Tidone Hospital in Castelsangiovanni.

His clinical expertise spans all fields of cardiovascular medicine, with a particular focus on heart failure and heart disease.

He is currently the Vice President of the European Society of Cardiology.

He has held research coordination roles in national and international scientific societies such as:

• Italian Association for Cardiovascular Prevention
• European Society of Cardiology
• Heart Failure Association
• European Association of Preventive Cardiology

He has authored 351 peer-reviewed articles (PubMed), contributed to drafting 31 European guidelines, 53 position papers, delivered 136 invited lectures at international conferences, and edited 12 books. In 2016, he led the VI Joint Task Force that drafted the European guidelines on cardiovascular prevention.

His current clinical interests include:

• Medical management of cardiovascular diseases
• Heart failure
• Cardiomyopathies
• Cardio-respiratory interactions
• Neuroendocrine control of the cardiovascular system
• Pathophysiology and clinical aspects of heart failure

In addition, he leads projects on risk factor control, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and the prevention of heart failure, as well as the applications of cardiopulmonary tests for diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases.

He has conducted research on the pathophysiology of heart failure, the role of neurohormonal imbalance in the progression of heart failure, as well as the mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases, innovation in diagnostics, and therapy.
