Dr. Nicola Buzzatti is a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Cardiac Surgery Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Francesco Maisano. He is also responsible for the hybrid operating room and the TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) program at the Heart Valve Center of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan.
Dr. Buzzatti graduated with honors and a special mention in Medicine and Surgery in 2010 from Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He then specialized in cardiac surgery, also with honors, under the supervision of Professor Ottavio Alfieri at the same university.
His primary areas of interest within adult cardiac surgery include traditional, minimally invasive, and transcatheter surgical treatments for valve diseases, with a focus on:
- Aortic Valve Replacement: For stenosis, insufficiency, or degeneration of previous prostheses, performed either through TAVI or minimally invasive surgery.
- Mitral Valve Repair: Using transcatheter techniques (MitraClip) or minimally invasive surgery for mitral regurgitation.
- Transcatheter Mitral Valve Procedures: Including valvuloplasty for mitral stenosis and transcatheter mitral valve replacement.
- Tricuspid Valve Repair and Replacement: Performed through transcatheter or surgical methods (TriClip, Cardiovalve, TricValve).
- Pulmonary Valve Replacement: Using transcatheter or surgical approaches.
- Transcatheter Treatment of Valve Prosthesis Failures: Including Valve-in-Valve, Valve-in-Ring, Clip-in-Ring, and leak closure procedures.
Dr. Buzzatti has authored over 100 publications indexed on PubMed, with an H-index of 24 as of 2023. He is a regular speaker at major international conferences, including AATS, EACTS, EuroPCR, PCR London Valves, and TCT.
Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for several leading journals in the field, such as the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EJCTS), Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (JTCVS), EuroIntervention, European Heart Journal (EHJ), Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), Circulation, Heart, International Journal of Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine, and the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA).
