Enrico Gherlone
Biography
Professor Enrico Gherlone is the Head of the Dentistry Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Rector of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, and Vice President of the University's Board of Directors.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Genoa, where he also specialized in Odontostomatology. His clinical work focuses on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of common oral diseases in children, the creation of aesthetic and implant-supported prostheses, and oral surgery using advanced techniques such as laser and operating microscopes. Professor Gherlone also develops implant-supported prostheses for patients with bone deficiencies, utilizing intra- and extra-oral grafts, and performs prosthetic rehabilitations supported by osteointegrated implants using minimally invasive techniques.
As a coordinator of the technical table on dentistry at the Ministry of Health, he led the project for clinical recommendations in odontostomatology. From January 2015 to December 2018, he served as President of the College of Professors of Odontostomatological Disciplines.
A pioneer in translational research in dentistry, he leads research groups studying the molecular biology of human cells in contact with biomaterials and bone substitutes to develop minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Professor Gherlone has received numerous accolades, including the Scientific Research Award from the Salerno Medical School and the William Laney Award from the Academy of Osseointegration in the United States. He holds patents for two implant systems and collaborates with leading institutions such as the Complutense University of Madrid, Boston University, and the Malo Clinic in Lisbon.
He is a frequent speaker at medical panels and congresses and has authored seven monographs, seven book chapters, and 280 impact-factor papers (total Impact Factor 932, 990 citations, H-Index 49) in international journals such as International Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Implants, European Journal of Inflammation, European Journal of Histochemistry, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Implant Dentistry, and BioMed Research International. Additionally, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Journal of Osseointegration and as Academic Editor of the journal Surgery and Practice.
Professor Gherlone is President of the Cultural Association for Implant Research San Raffaele – Oral Sciences (ACRIS), the Italian Society of Prosthetic and Implant Dentistry (2007–2009), and the Italian Gnathology Association (2000–2002). He is also a member of the Italian Society of Odontostomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery (SIOCMF) and the Genoa section of the National Association of Italian Dentists (ANDI). Since October 2024, he has been President of SIPRO – the Italian Society of Dental Prosthetics and Oral Rehabilitation.
