Biography

Professor Francesco De Cobelli is the Head of the Department of Radiology at the Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute in Milan, as well as Full professor in Radiology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. In addition, he is the Director of the School of Specialization in Radiology, Co-Director of the International PhD Doctorate in Clinical and Experimental Medicine at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and part of Research Units in Clinical and Experimental Radiology at the Center for Experimental Imaging at San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan in 1991. During this period, he also studied as a fellow in the United States at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, USA. He specialized in Radiology at the University of Milan in 1995 and began his clinical career in San Raffaele in 1996 at the Radiology Department where he later became the Unit Head of the Magnetic Resonance service while receiving his nomination as Professor, first adjunct and then full. As of 2014, he is the Director of the Post-graduate School in radiology (specialization) and Co-Director of the International PhD course in Clinical and Experimental Medicine at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, and as of 2019 President of the bachelor’s degree in nursing. As of the same year, he is Director of the Radiology Department of Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute.

Professor De Cobelli’s main areas of clinical and research include magnetic resonance imaging, abdominaland pelvic radiology (in particular hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors, tumors of the stomach and esophagus, colon and rectum cancers and renal and prostate malignancies), cardiac imaging and interventional radiology in oncology (Interventional Oncology). His scientific research is mainly focused on detection and characterization of oncological imaging and the use of imaging as a non-invasive biomarker for the evaluation of treatment response and has been involved in the validation of radiomic algorithms as add-on quantitative tools in aiding diagnosis and describing diseases He is currently the principal investigator and co- investigator in numerous national and international clinical trials.

Currently, he is the Principal Investigator or Co-PI of numerous multicentric trials primarily focusing on interventional radiology and imaging diagnostics. He has authored 212 scientific articles published in national and international journals, a book on magnetic resonance imaging, and over 30 book chapters. Professor Francesco De Cobelli boasts high H-Index and citation counts (Scopus: H-Index 38, 5668 citations; Google Scholar: H-Index 45, 7606 citations). He consistently participates in national and international conferences and meetings in his field. Prof. De Cobelli has been elected President of the Lombardy Regional Group of SIRM (Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology) for the 2025-2026 term.
