Luigi Albano
Biography
Dr. Luigi Albano is a Neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Pietro Mortini.
Born in Avellino in 1987, he graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan in 2012, where he specialized in Neurosurgery in 2019. He completed his training in 2023, with honors, earning a Ph.D. in Neurosciences and Experimental Neurology from the International Doctoral School of Molecular Medicine at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan.
From 2018 to 2019, he conducted research abroad at the Department of Neurosurgery, Brain Mapping and Restoration Laboratory at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), USA. Awarded the Lars Leksell Fellowship Award, in 2021 (June – November) he worked as a Clinical Fellow at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh (UPMC), USA, with which he continues to collaborate on numerous research projects.
Dr. Albano has been active in the Neurochirurgical Unit since 2013. He has participated in over 2,000 neurosurgical procedures, for both brain conditions (tumors, trauma, hemorrhages, hydrocephalus) and spinal conditions (herniated discs, stenosis, instability, tumors), as well as Gamma Knife radiosurgery treatments.
In the field of functional neurosurgery, he addresses movement disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia), facial pain and chronic pain (e.g., trigeminal neuralgia, neuropathic pain), and restoration of neurological functions using neuromodulation techniques (deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation) and Gamma Knife radiosurgery.
His scientific interests, reflected in numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, focus primarily on functional neurosurgery and radiosurgery; from studying the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying movement and pain disorders to developing innovative neurosurgical/radiosurgical techniques for their treatment and neuromodulation techniques for the restoration of neurological disorders.
He regularly participates as a speaker at national and international scientific congresses.
