Biography

Dr. Monica Falautano is a psychologist, psychotherapist, and the coordinator of the Psychology Unit associated with the Neurology and Neurorehabilitation Units at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Professor Massimo Filippi.

After obtaining her degree in Clinical Psychology and passing the state exam, she was registered with the Lombardy Register of Psychologists. She attended the Cognitive Psychotherapy training course at SITCC, where she completed her specialization in 1997 and was subsequently listed on the national register of psychotherapists.

In 2020, she earned a diploma for Complex Structure Management, focusing on "Management control, healthcare planning and organization, social policies, healthcare guidelines, communication" through IREF and SDS (School of Health Management) and Ernst & Young in Milan. In 2018, she trained as a psychologist specializing in promoting resilience in individuals affected by multiple sclerosis as part of the Ready Project (Resilience in Activity of Daily Life) at the Besta Institute in Milan, in collaboration with AISM (Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association).

Since 2021, she has also been an instructor for FIDAL (Italian Athletics Federation).

Dr. Falautano is actively involved in clinical practice, focusing on neuropsychological assessments, psychotherapy, and cognitive rehabilitation. She supervises younger colleagues and serves as a tutor for psychology students. She specializes in psychological and neuropsychological diagnostics, psychotherapy, and cognitive rehabilitation for individuals with central nervous system diseases, such as dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and cerebrovascular diseases, both during hospitalization and in outpatient settings. She also provides psychological support to the patients' families. Additionally, she collaborates with the OSR Multiple Sclerosis Center to manage the psychological well-being of people with multiple sclerosis.

She also teaches at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in the Neurology Specialization School and in the Physiotherapy Degree Program.

In terms of research, Dr. Falautano is active with the Alzheimer’s Task Force of the Municipality of Milan, contributing to the management of psychosocial and care aspects. She is involved in the project of the Virtual Institute for Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunological Disorders of the RIN Network.

She is the co-author of several works in the field of neuropsychology, published in international scientific journals and presented at scientific conferences. Her research focuses on neuropsychological clinical practice in neurodegenerative diseases, the incidence of cognitive disorders in people with multiple sclerosis, with particular attention to correlations with neuroimaging data and the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation treatments.

Her current areas of interest and study include the healthcare system in neurology and promoting the well-being of people with multiple sclerosis and their caregivers, as well as the detection and potential enhancement of cognitive reserve as a means to counter cognitive degeneration.

She is a member of the FISM (Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation) Scientific Committee, where she is involved in the selection of research projects in the psychosocial and rehabilitative fields.
