Biography

Dr. Paola Cellerino is an assistant surgeon in the Coloproctology and Pelvic Floor Surgery Unit at IRCCS Policlinico San Donato and IRCCS Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio, and she also serves as a consultant coloproctologist at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.

After earning her degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Milan, she specialized in General Surgery at the same university in 1999.

Throughout her career, Dr. Cellerino has gained specialized training in coloproctology, with experience at renowned international centers such as St. Mark’s Hospital and Academic Institute in London (2006), the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA (2003), the Department of Coloproctology at the University Hospital of Geneva (2001), and the Department of Surgery at Lund University Hospital, Sweden (1997).

From 2000 to 2018, she worked as a general surgeon at the Department of General Surgery at Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan. From 2018 to 2022, she continued her work as a general surgeon with a specific focus on benign and malignant coloproctological conditions at Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Milan.

At these institutions, Dr. Cellerino was responsible for the Colonproctology service and actively collaborated with the Stomatherapy and Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation services. During her time at Sacco Hospital, she also served as a consultant to the Infectious Diseases departments, gaining specialized expertise in surgical pathologies in immunocompromised patients. She was a member of the interdisciplinary group for the study of pathologies associated with the papillomavirus (GISPAP) in collaboration with the Infectious Diseases, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pathology, and Microbiology departments at Sacco Hospital.

In coloproctology, Dr. Cellerino has developed a particular interest in treating pelvic floor disorders, with a special focus on women's health, including rectal or multicompartmental prolapse, incontinence, and obstructed defecation syndrome.

She performs traditional and high-resolution anoscopies (HRA) for the study of HPV-related conditions, such as condylomas and tumors of the anus and anal canal.

She is also skilled in performing surgeries for hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses, and perianal fistulas, using various surgical techniques, including mechanical staplers, hemorrhoidectomy, laser, THD, radiofrequency, and ultrasonic scalpel.

Dr. Cellerino has attended numerous specialist courses and is the author of many scientific papers published in prestigious national and international journals. Additionally, she has organized residential courses focused on colorectal pathology, such as “The Care Pathway for Patients with Enterostomy” (2009-2019) and “Prevention and Rehabilitation of Urinary and Fecal Incontinence in Women” (2009).
