Roberta Messina
Biography
Dr. Roberta Messina is a neurologist specializing in Headaches and Facial Pain at the Neurology Unit of IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, directed by Prof. Massimo Filippi.
After graduating in Medicine and Surgery from Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in 2011, with honors, she specialized in Neurology at the same university, obtaining her Neurologist title in 2018 (grade: 70/70 with honors).
During her specialization, she worked for 18 months at the Headache Centre of King's College London, where she deepened her knowledge and skills in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches and facial pain.
After completing her specialization, she embarked on a PhD in Experimental Neurology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele. During her PhD, she conducted extensive research on the use of advanced MRI techniques to understand the mechanisms underlying migraine attacks and cluster headache attacks. She contributed to several academic projects in collaboration with national and international researchers.
Her clinical work focuses primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of primary headaches, such as migraines, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches, secondary headaches, and facial pain, including trigeminal neuralgia. She is involved in numerous clinical trials assessing the efficacy and safety of new therapies for migraine prevention.
She has had the opportunity to work at two major International Headache Centers, the Headache Centre of King's College London and the Danish Headache Centre in Copenhagen.
Her research aims to achieve a better understanding of the causes and pathogenic mechanisms involved in migraine and other forms of headaches using advanced MRI techniques.
Additionally, she focuses on studying preventive and acute therapies for migraines, with the goal of identifying the most effective and personalized treatments for patients.
She is the author of numerous articles published in indexed journals and some book chapters. She is a member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of Headache and Pain, a reviewer for various scientific journals, a member of the Educational Committee of the International Headache Society, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Neurological Association for Headache Research.
