Essential iris atrophy
What is it?
It is a rare disease of unknown prevalence characterized by progressive atrophy of the iris.
The disease usually manifests itself by about the third decade of life, and affects both eyes, although often not simultaneously. Initially, a biomicroscopic examination of areas of iris atrophy can be observed, which increase (pseudopolycoria stage), which leads to diffuse iris atrophy, in which the iris shrinks to a thin peripheral (pseudoaniridia stage).
The peripheral iris can obstruct the irised-corneal angle, causing severe, difficult-to-treat glaucoma.
How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis of the disease remains clinical and instrumental (in particular, examination with a slit lamp, ultrasound biomicroscopy, optical coherence tomography of the anterior segment).
How is it treated?
No therapy is indicated other than the treatment of complications (glaucoma).
