Smoking and the importance of prevention
Giulia Veronesi
Biography
Professor Giulia Veronesi is Director of the strategic program of Robotic Thoracic Surgery in synergy with the Thoracic Surgery Unit at the San Raffaele Research Hospital. She holds a position of an associate professor at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University (UniSR) and practices at the medical center Casa di Cura La Madonnina in Milan.
She graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milan (Università degli Studi di Milano) in 1994, where in 2000 she concluded a specialization in Gastrointestinal Surgery. In 2006 she obtained another specialization in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Modena (Università degli Studi di Modena).
Due to 15 years of experience at the European Institute of Oncology and to the training carried out at the Institute Mutualiste Montsouris in Paris and at the Humanitas, Professor Veronesi has been dealing with treatments of locally advanced thoracic oncological pathologies for many years. In particular, since 2007 she has been dedicated to the minimally invasive robotic approach for treatment of early and locally advanced lung cancer, mediastinal tumors and myasthenia.
Professor Veronesi teaches robotic thoracic surgery in various Italian and foreign centers including Barcelona, Pamplona, Geneva, Rome, Cuneo, Terni, Pescara and Catania.
Professor Veronesi coordinates several international studies, including a multicentre randomized trial which compars robotic and videothoracoscopic surgery for treatment of lung cancer. Currently she is a principal investigator inresearch, funded by AIRC, Italian Ministry of Health and the European Union, aimed at developing effective lung cancer screening programs, which will allow timely diagnosis and treatment of lung cancers (e.g., COSMOS studies 1 and 2 and the SMAC project).
She is author of over 200 scientific articles published in national and international journals and of 8 book chapters. Her H index is 35.
Professor Veronesi had founded and now coordinates the robotic thoracic group of the European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS). She is a member of several scientific societies, among which International IASLC Strategic Screening Advisory Committee (SSAC), European Society of Thoracic Surgery, Italian Society of Thoracic Surgery (SICT), European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), where she is also a member of the Guidelines Working Group on early stage and locally advanced lung cancer.
During her career, she has won numerous awards, among which award Women and Technologies for activity in roboticfield and lung cancer screening in 2017 and Robert J. Ginsberg Lectureship Award for Surgery which she received at the World Conference on Lung Cancer in Barcelona in 2019.
