Biography
Dr. Lorenzo Menicanti is the Head of the Department for Heart Surgery in Adults at the Policlinico San Donato Research Clinical Institute in Milan, which includes the Departments of Cardiac Surgery for Adults, University Cardiac Surgery and Translational Research, Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease. At the Clinical Institute Policlinico San Donato he also holds the prestigious position of the Scientific Director.
He graduated with honors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome in 1975 and specialized in urology there in 1979. In 1984, he specialized in pediatric surgery in Verona and in 1989 - in cardiac surgery in Padua. In 1990, he passed certification for the position of the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and the Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery.
In 1980, he was the Assistant chef de Clinique at the University of Marseille and in 1988 - at the University of Nice. He studied surgery at prestigious American and British universities and hospitals.
Since 1988, he has been working at the Policlinico San Donato Research Clinical Institute, in 1990, he was appointed the Head of the Cardiac Surgery Department. Over the years, he has personally performed over 16,000 major heart surgeries for both congenital and acquired diseases, contributing to the establishment of the Policlinico San Donato Clinical Institute as a national and international center of excellence with over 55,000 surgical patients.
Since 1987, he has been a consultant at the Cardiothoracic Center of Monaco (Principality of Monaco), and has also acted as the Visiting Professor at many universities, including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (2019), Beijing University in China (2009) and University of Tokyo in Japan (2002).
He is the past Chairman of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH), past Co-Chair of the STITCH Surgical Clinical Research Committee for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (USA), and the member of the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS), Association of Inpatient Cardiologists, European Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, Belgian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. In November 2020, he took over as the Chairman of the Cardiology Network, the largest Italian network for cardiovascular research.
He has over 230 publications in the most influential Italian and foreign scientific journals.
