Paolo Cavoretto
Biography
Dr. Paolo Ivo Cavoretto is an obstetrician-gynecologist in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele under the supervision of Professor Massimo Candiani.
After graduating with honors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan in 1999, he specialized in gynecology and obstetrics at the Vita Salute San Raffaele University of Milan in 2005. In the period from 2004 to 2006, he was awarded a research scholarship at King's College Hospital (London, UK), and in 2006 he received a diploma in fetal medicine at the Fetal Medicine Foundation UK (FMF; London, UK). Since 2006, he has been a lecturer and certified specialist in obstetric ultrasound at the FMF and the Italian Society of Obstetric and Gynecological Ultrasound (SIEOG). Since 2008, he has been collaborating as a teacher and mentor at the courses of medicine and surgery and at the Specialized School of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. In 2011, he received the doctorate in Development of Prenatal Diagnosis and Fetal Therapy from the University of Milan. In 2017, he received a national scientific qualification as a second-level university professor.
Clinically, he practices as a specialist in the maternity ward and delivery rooms, and as co-director of the Fetal Medicine Center as an expert in ultrasound diagnostics, prenatal screening and maternal and fetal medicine. His clinical interest is mainly in high-risk pregnancy, diagnosis, and treatment of structural or genetic fetal abnormalities, fetal echocardiography and neurosonology, intranatal monitoring, ultrasound-guided invasive procedures (for diagnostic/therapeutic purposes) and fetal surgery, in particular for spina bifida.
As for research activities, he is responsible for numerous monocentric or multicenter projects in cooperation with recognized national and international institutions. The main areas of research relate to the diagnosis and treatment of anomalies in the structure of the fetus (especially congenital heart defects) during pregnancy and in the perinatal period; intrauterine treatment for fetal spina bifida and study of the development of the nervous system of affected fetuses; viral cytomegalovirus infections during pregnancy; prediction and prevention of preterm birth using functional magnetic resonance and fetal-placental ultrasound; study of placental and cardiovascular function in pregnant women with pathology, placental insufficiency or conception after IVF / ICSI and egg donation; study of the genetics of IVF/ICSI pregnancies after pre-implantation diagnosis; prediction and monitoring of the state of the fetus and intranatal complications using biophysical techniques and biomarkers.
Finally, Dr. Cavoretto is an active member of the editorial board of the prestigious scientific journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG), the International Fetoscopy Group and the First Quarter and Non-Invasive Genetic Testing Committee (SIEOG) and is already an ISUOG consultant. He works as an associate editor for the scientific journal BMC Pregnancy and Childbirthand as a guest editor for the scientific journal Diagnostics. He is the author and co-author of numerous publications in reputable indexed scientific journals, cooperates at the editorial level and as a reviewer with many other important international periodicals. He constantly participates as a speaker at national and international industry congresses. His Hirsch Index is 15.
