Pietro Mortini
Biography
Professor Pietro Mortini is the Head of the Neurosurgery and Stereotactic Radiosurgery Unit at IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan and performs outpatient activities at Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
He is Professor of Neurosurgery at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele and Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at George Washington University in Washington D.C. (USA)
His educational pathway began in Parma where he graduated in Medicine and Surgery with honors in 1986. In 1991, he specialized in Neurosurgery at the University of Verona. He gained vast experiences abroad: he attended, among others, the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the Hôpital Lariboisière in Paris.
In 1999, he obtained an International Fellowship at the Neurological Institute of the George Washington University which, in 2002, awarded him the title of Visiting Professor of Neurosurgery.
As a surgeon, Prof. Mortini has focused on skull base surgery, brain and spinal tumors and treatment of cerebrovascular pathologies. He has performed more than 8,000 neurosurgical interventions and stereotactic radiosurgery procedures using Gamma Knife.
The Neurosurgery Unit headed by him is an international reference center for the treatment of pituitary tumors (non-secreting Pituitary Adenomas, Cushing's Disease, Acromegaly, Prolactinomas, Craniopharyngiomas), with over 200 cases treated per year. The Unit is at the forefront in the use of new technologies (examples are: three-dimensional intraoperative endoscopy, cortical mapping with intraoperative monitoring, intraoperative ultrasound, intraoperative neurophysiology, minimally invasive cerebral portal surgery and spinal surgery, and neuronavigator). Moreover, the world's first robotic brain tumor removal surgery was performed in the Unit in 2020.
Throughout his career, in addition to his clinical activity, Professor Mortini has dedicated himself to the research and development of new neurosurgical techniques, including the design of over 60 new micro-neurosurgical instruments. Since 2008, he is Director of the School of Specialization in Neurosurgery of the University Vita Salute San Raffaele and Director of various Master degree programs of the same University.
He is the author of over 230 publications published in scientific journals of high international relevance, and is a member of the Editorial Board of several specialized journals. Since 2015, he is Visiting Consultant at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kuwait City.
