Biography

Professor Roberto Chiesa is the Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Ospedale San Raffaele Clinical Research Institute in Milan, as well as an ordinary professor in vascular surgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. In addition, he cooperates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina Clinic.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milan, where he specialized in general surgery and vascular surgery. Subsequently, he moved to the University of Siena, where he specialized in cardiac surgery.

During his education, he gained a variety of experience abroad: he studied at Claude Bernard University (Università Claude Bernard) in Lyon, where he improved his skills and was engaged in research activities in the field of surgery of the vessels of the abdominal cavity and peripheral vessels, as well as kidney and pancreas transplants, Thoracic and Cardiac Surgical Unit at Harefield Hospital, Herfield-Middlesex, where he improved his skills in abdominal aortic surgery and heart surgery (heart transplant), Baylor College of Medicine at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, where he gained experience in the surgery of aneurysm of the thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta.

The clinical and research activities of Professor Roberto Chiesa are focused on the following areas: surgery of the thoracoabdominal aorta; endovascular and hybrid treatment of diseases of the aortic arch, descending thoracic aorta and abdominal aorta in congenital and acquired anomalies; treatment of injuries of the extracranial carotid artery and minimally invasive endovascular treatment of carotid stenosis by stenting and the use of antiembolic systems of cerebral protection. Performed over 25,000 surgical procedures as the first surgeon.

Professor Chiesa is the author of 12 monographs and over 450 scientific publications in accredited journals such as the Journal of Vascular Surgery, European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Annals of Vascular Surgery, Journal of Endovascular Therapy, and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He was a member of the Committee for the Definition of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) Guidelines for Thoracic Aortic Disorders, published in 2017, and the joint European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) and European Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) Guidelines for Aortic Arch Disorders published in 2019.

He is also involved in numerous international trials for the development of an abdominal and thoracic aortic prosthesis for the treatment of aneurysm and dissection. He has participated as a speaker in over 500 national and international congresses.

Professor Chiesa is a member of the most prestigious national and international societies of vascular surgery, and for 15 years he has been organizer and chairman of the international congress Aortic Surgery - How to do it, which brings together leading experts in the field of vascular surgery, cardiac surgery and cardioanesthesiology and has more than 1000 participants from all over the world.
