Stefania Acerno
Biography
Dr. Stefania Acerno is Head of the Functional Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery in the Operational Department of Neurosurgery and Gamma Knife of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele under the supervision of Professor Pietro Mortini.
After graduating from the University of Milan in 1994 with a degree in Medicine and Surgery, in 2000 she specialized in neurosurgery at the same institute. In 2002, she received the Board of the European Society of Neurosurgeons, and in 2006 – the Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. During her studies, she also spent periods abroad at the Children's Hospital of the University of Southern California and at Hospital Necker-enfantes Malades in Paris. In 2009, she received her Executive Master's Degree in Health Organization Management from the Bocconi University School of Management in raising funds in support of Pediatric Specialist Surgery with honors.
To date, Dr. Acerno has performed over 2,500 surgical interventions (many also as a teaching surgeon at the Vita-Salute University Postgraduate School of Neurosurgery) on infants, children, adolescents, and adults suffering from malformations (hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations, spina bifida, craniosynostosis) and oncological pathologies (gliomas, medulloblastomas, ependymomas, craniopharyngiomas, meningiomas, neurinomas) of the nervous system, as well as interventions using endoscopic, ultrasound and radiosurgical methods. Since 2010, she has been a regional referent at the Network Center for Rare Diseases on Chiari Malformations and Spina Bifida. She has participated in numerous humanitarian missions in Africa and the Middle East, performing neurosurgical interventions on the spot.
Her scientific papers (Hirsch Index 11) are published in indexed international journals such as: Child Nervous System, Journal Of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Review, Acta Neurochirurgica, Journal of Neurology Neurosurgical Psychiatry, Neuropathology, International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics, European Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
She is a member of international scientific societies: EANS (European Society of Neurosurgery), ESPN (European Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery), ISNP (International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery) and a graduate of the University of Southern California and the Bocconi School of Management.
