Echocolor Doppler
What is it?
The evolution of ultrasound diagnostics has transformed the clinical approach enabling, with increasing accuracy, a broader evaluation of the groups of patients. In specific cases of vascular diagnostics, we can establish pathological variations in the speed of blood flow and, consequently, the presence of pathologies of the arteries that limit or impede flow within them.
The correct term for the examination that is most commonly used today and most effective in clinical practice is echocolordoppler, making it possible to achieve a diagnostic accuracy that in some cases can even dedect the necessity of surgery without involvement of additional examinations.
Its advantages are undoubtedly related to the non-invasiveness of the method and to the low management costs; this allows the examination to be performed among the majority and scarcely selected populations, helping to complete the understanding of the patient's disorders and indicating the subsequent stages of therapy and possible diagnosis. In some cases, the examination has limitations that should recommend a completion of the diagnostic procedure with other methods such as MR angiography or traditional angiography. This occurs especially where tissues with high calcium content obstruct the passage of ultrasound, hiding the arteries and information on the blood flow within them.
When is this exam indicated?
Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive method to diagnose and monitor the main vascular disorders: aneurysms, atherosclerotic lesions, venous insufficiency, thrombosis.
How is it performed?
The examination is generally performed in a supine position with the head extended in order to expose the greatest possible stretch of skin covering the artery to the examiner's evaluation. A probe, which performs the dual function of producing ultrasound and collecting the echoes generated by the underlying tissues, is placed on the skin; the use of gel prevents air from getting between the skin and the probe, reducing the chances of an inaccurate diagnosis.
Contraindications
There are no contraindications for the execution of this examination.
