Musculoskeletal ultrasound
What is it?
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an imaging method which uses high-frequency sounds to obtain very high resolution images of patient's body. It can be used in most parts of the human body, but it is particularly effective in the musculoskeletal system. It can be used to assess thoroughly tendons, superficial ligaments, joints, subcutaneous tissues, nerves, and can be used as a guidance for many interventional procedures, such as tendon treatments or joint injections.
When is this exam indicated?
This imaging method is used as first-line examination when a pathologic condition of a tendon, superficial ligament, joint, subcutaneous tissue, nerve is suspected, or to guide interventional procedures, such as tendon treatments or joint injections
How is it performed?
The exam is very simple and not invasive. The physician applies on the skin of the patient a small ultrasound probe with some acqueous gel to obtain images of the relevant area of the patient's body. The patient may be asked to perform selected movements to improve the visibility of the structures. The examination is totally painless.
Contraindications
None. This exam is totally harmless for patients.
