Uroflowmetry and Post Void Residual
What is it?
Uroflowmetry is a functional examination, easy to perform, non-invasive and easily repeatable. It provides fundamental information about the flow values produced by a patient's bladder.
When is this exam indicated?
It is an examination that allows to trace the urinary profile of patients with bladder voiding problems, in particular with symptoms affecting the lower urinary tract and can be associated with problems of urinary obstruction.
How is it performed?
The patient is invited to urinate into a special instrument that can record some urinary parameters, such as the speed of the urine flow and the voided volume. Routine uroflowmetry is performed for all patients with prostatic hypertrophy associated with lower urinary tract symptoms. Generally, the examination is performed for all patients with a suspicion of obstructive disease (urethral stenosis, stones, etc..) or non-obstructive functional disease of the lower excretory system.
Uroflowmetry allows to assess the general condition of the lower urinary tract, but does not always allow to identify specific disorders. Sometimes it may be necessary to complete the functional evaluation of the urinary system by performing a complete urodynamic examination.
For a better assessment of the health status of the urinary tract, the uroflowmetric examination is often completed with an evaluation of the volume of urine remaining in the bladder at the end of urination. This volume is measured by ultrasound.
