Pediatric Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery
Congenital heart diseases are anatomical malformations of the heart and large vessels that occur at birth, due to incomplete or incorrect cardiac development during the life of the embryo or fetus. In Italy about 4,000 children with congenital heart disease are born every year. Thanks to increasingly in-depth diagnostic tests, our specialists can discover the presence of a heart problem already in the first weeks of pregnancy and, consequently, plan the birth in such a way as to avoid any risk for the baby.
Thanks to the great progress of treatments, today 90% of patients born with heart disease reach adulthood, a much higher figure than 20-30 years ago, when survival was between 80 and 70%. There are about 100,000 adult congenital heart patients in Italy, 2.3 million in Europe.
