Medical treatment of rosacea

What is it?

Topical medications such as metronidazole gel or ivermectin cream may be used. In more extensive cases, courses of systemic antibiotics, such as tetracyclines, are used. In these cases, metronidazole can be taken systemically. Topical therapy with protective emollient and anti-redness creams is also useful.

When is this procedure indicated?

Metronidazole is used on papulo-pustular forms. Ivermectin has a more broad-spectrum use. When the inflammatory and pustular component is particularly evident, systemic antibiotics are prescribed.

How is it performed?

Metronidazole and ivermectin are topical medications in gel or ointment form. Antibiotics are taken systemically, as is metronidazole in severe, relapsing cases.

Contraindications

It is necessary to avoid temperature changes. Total sun protection is also necessary in spring and summer. For the drugs, no particular adverse reactions have been reported.
