Topical therapies for non-melanoma skin cancers
What is it?
It involves the application of different creams in order to create a strong local inflammatory reaction that causes the destruction of the tumor tissue.
When is this procedure indicated?
Actinic keratoses or superficial basaliomas.
How is it performed?
Other local treatments include the application of creams, such as diclofenac 3% gel (used for superficial actinic keratosis), 5-fluorouracil + silicylic acid cream (used for hyperkeratotic actinic keratosis), imiquimod 5% cream (for superficial basal cell carcinoma), imiquimod 3% cream (for actinic keratosis), and 5-fluorouracil (for actinic keratosis).
Contraindications
Mild local burning sensation, vesiculation, crusty reaction. Local erythema and crusting, sometimes with postinflammatory hyper- or hypopigmentation.
