Pediatric Orthopaedics
Pediatric Orthopedics deals with musculoskeletal pathologies in the pediatric patient. At Gruppo San Donato dedicated teams, made up of medical and nursing staff, are trained for the management of specific problems related to the patient’s young age, during all phases of the therapeutic path.
Achondroplasia, a condition characterized by a reduced growth of the limbs and a normal development of the trunk, is one of the flagships of the GSD pediatric orthopedic activity: this condition, characterized by a short stature, is disabling for the performance of daily life activities. Ospedale Galeazzi-Sant’Ambrogio offers patients a 5 steps treatment by means of lengthening with external fixators that usually allows a total lengthening of 28-32 cm letting the patient reach a sufficient stature to carry out all daily activities.
Other pathologies routinely treated include congenital foot and hip pathologies, such as clubfoot, varus metatarsus and congenital hip dysplasia or pathological conditions present at birth and requiring super-specialized treatments.
Arthroscopy represents another important service enabling treatment of the pediatric age pathologies, such as discoid meniscus or ligament ruptures in minimally invasive manner. Furthermore, the treatment reserved for another category of childhood pathologies, osteochondrosis, i.e. inflammations of the growth plate that can affect various bone segments, in particular the heel, knee and back.
