Federica Alemanno
Biography
Professor Federica Alemanno is the Head of the Neuropsychology Service and Coordinator of Psychologists, Neuropsychologists, Biologists, Nutritionists, Speech Therapists, and Osteopaths at the Department of Rehabilitation and Functional Recovery at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. She is also responsible for Intraoperative Cognitive Monitoring during awake neurosurgery for the removal of tumor lesions located in eloquent areas for language, memory, and attention. Additionally, she collaborates with the Casa di Cura La Madonnina.
She is a Professor at the School of Specialization in Neurosurgery at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and at the School of Specialization in Neuropsychology at the Faculty of Psychology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.
She is a member of the executive committee of the Italian Network of Neuroscience and Rehabilitation (RIN), funded by the Ministry of Health. Within the RIN, Professor Alemanno is the Referent and Task Leader for "Innovative Cognitive Rehabilitation with Virtual Reality and Telemedicine" of the "National Virtual Institutes – Dementias," that is, the IRCCS (Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization, and Healthcare) present throughout Italy.
She is the Coordinator of the Well Being Program for international patients at the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
She serves as the Representative of Psychologists in the Association of Rehabilitation Specialist Doctors of Private Hospitals (ARSOP - Scientific Society).
After obtaining a master's degree in Cognitive Neuroscience (Medicine, Psychology, Philosophy) with cum laude and academic honors, Professor Federica Alemanno received her International Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine, in the section of Experimental Neurology, with the distinction of Outstanding, at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. She specialized in the neurophysiological correlates of cognitive functions and in the treatment of neurocognitive disorders associated with degenerative neurological diseases (dementias), traumatic conditions (strokes and head injuries), and oncological conditions (brain tumors), as well as in the psychological and behavioral management of patients and their families.
She further honed her skills by conducting post-doctoral clinical research at the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD, USA), where she specialized in the treatment of cognitive disorders associated with neurological diseases using new technologies (non-invasive brain neuromodulation).
She is certified for the treatment of brain neuromodulation synchronized with cognitive training (NeuroAd System, Israel) and for Good Clinical Practice (investigator version) for conducting clinical research projects.
Her areas of clinical and research activity include:
-
Neuropsychology: Neuropsychological assessments in patients with suspected or confirmed cognitive or language disorders, affected by neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, and various etiologies), and those affected by acute and post-acute neurological conditions (e.g., strokes and head injuries); intraoperative cognitive monitoring during awake neurosurgery for the removal of tumors located in cognitive eloquent areas for language, memory, attention for neurosurgical conditions (e.g., brain tumors, malformations, aneurysms).
-
Cognitive and Language Rehabilitation: Multimodal neuropsychological rehabilitation treatment (cognitive training) of cognitive disorders using new technologies (immersive and semi-immersive virtual reality, tele-rehabilitation, neuromodulation methods, tDCS, TMS, and TMS combined with cognitive training).
-
Psychology: Counseling and psychological support for patients with emotional distress, anxiety, and depression; for patients with cognitive, neurological, oncological conditions, chronic pain, and their families.
-
Non-Pharmacological Treatment of Chronic Pain: Management and treatment of chronic pain (using virtual reality methods) and psychological support.
Additionally, Professor Alemanno is an investigator in prestigious international clinical studies on Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other highly prevalent neurological diseases. She is the author of numerous scientific articles published in international peer-reviewed journals in neurology, neuropsychology, and neurorehabilitation. She is also a speaker and invited speaker at numerous international scientific conferences.
