Giacomo Giacalone

Dr. Giacomo Giacalone is a neurologist of the Stroke Unit of the Department of Neurology of the IRCCS Ospedale San Raffaele, headed by Professor Massimo Filippi.

After graduating with honors from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan in 2008, in 2014 he majored with honors in neurology at the same university. In 2018, he received a doctorate in molecular medicine and experimental neurology, at the same time he conducted research abroad at The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona.

Dr. Giacalone teaches a neuroscience course at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.

From a clinical point of view, the doctor mainly deals with cerebrovascular diseases both in their acute phase (stroke) and in the chronic phase (consequences of stroke, chronic cerebral vasculopathy, vascular dementia). As part of outpatient activities, he also performs general clinical activities for other neurological diseases and conditions, including headaches (migraine, tension headache, other idiopathic and secondary headaches), dizziness of central genesis, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, other neurodegenerative diseases, inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (multiple sclerosis), motor disorders, diseases of the peripheral nervous system.

In the field of scientific activity, the doctor deals with ischemic stroke, damage to small vessels of the brain, dissection of the cervical arteries, the use of advanced optical methods in the study of cerebral microcirculation in neurological diseases. He participates as a researcher in numerous national and international clinical trials. He also conducts research related to Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis and the genetics of complex neurological diseases.

He is the author and co-author of numerous publications in international scientific journals. Permanent participant as a speaker at national and international conferences.
