Project Aim
- Strengthening teaching and research in the field of communicable diseases at the University of Kassala
- Improving teaching offer at the Academy of Health Science of Kassala
- Improving capabilities in molecular diagnostics University in Khartoum and the Mycetoma Centre in Khartoum
- Improved ability of the Teaching Hospital laboratory services.
Background of the Project
The project was designed to support medical education is the state of Kassala through the strengthening of the laboratory diagnostic capacities, expansion of AHS teaching offerings, capacity building of the laboratory traineeship site at the Teaching Hospital in Kassala and molecular diagnostics at the academic sites in Khartoum. The project is implemented in partnership with the University of Sassari and financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS).
Objectives achieved
The new Molecular Biology laboratory at the University of Kassala was completed. The equipment for the operation of the microbiology laboratory at the University of Kassala and for the molecular biology laboratory at the same University was purchased; local staff (teachers and technicians at the University) was trained in the proper use of this equipment.
Scholarships in Italy were awarded to university teachers to run the microbiology and molecular biology laboratory. A specific course was delivered in molecular biology at the Mycetoma Center in Khartoum for 7 teachers from the University of Kassala. Teachers, laboratory workers and final year students of various laboratory disciplines were trained in Cytology.
