Martino Gianvito
Biography
Professor Gianvito Martino is a neurologist, Scientific Director of IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital, and Full Professor of Applied Biology as well as Vice-Rector for Research and the Third Mission at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University.
In 1987, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Pavia, where he also specialized in Neurology in 1991. From 1990 to 1992, he conducted research abroad at the Department of Neurology of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the Department of Neurology at the University of Chicago.
At the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, he led the Neuroimmunology Unit from 1997 to 2008 and the Neuroscience Division from 2008 to 2016. From 2016 to 2020, he served as Scientific Director. A former Honorary Professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University of London, he is currently a Full Professor of Applied Biology and Vice-Rector for Research and the Third Mission at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan.
He co-founded the Italian Association of Neuroimmunology (AINI), serving as its President from 2009 to 2012, as well as the European School of Neuroimmunology (ESNI) and the Global Schools of Neuroimmunology (GSNI), where he remains Scientific Coordinator. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Vice President, and from 2012 to 2014, he was President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology (ISNI). He has been a member of the scientific boards of numerous national and international scientific organizations, including the UK Multiple Sclerosis Society, Wellcome Trust's Peer Review College, INSERM, ECTRIMS, FISM, and MSIF. From 2017 to 2019, he was President of the Technical Scientific Committee of the Regional Foundation for Biomedical Research (FRRB). Since 2015, he has been a Panel Member of the European Research Council (ERC) and, since 2020, of NEURON-ERANET. Over the years, he has received numerous scientific awards, including the Rita Levi-Montalcini Prize.
His scientific interests, reflected in the publication of over 250 scientific articles, range from studying the pathogenic mechanisms underlying immune-mediated central nervous system disorders to developing gene therapy tools and innovative therapies using neural stem cells to treat these conditions.
