Radial Nerve Entrapment at the Wrist
What is it?
The area of the forearm below the short supinator is the place where the radial nerve is most commonly injured and compressed.
Which are the symptoms?
The patient has pain during movement of the elbow joint and a progressive loss of strength during extension of the wrist and fingers to what is called the “hanging hand” position.
How is it diagnosed?
Clinical and electromyographic examination is carried out during diagnosis.
Suggested exams
How is it treated?
Surgical intervention consists in the examination and decompression of the nerve located under the muscle. The procedure is performed with an anesthetic injected near the nerve plexus while the patient is conscious.
Improvement in terms of pain comes quickly, but movement deficits require physical therapy.
